5 Bar Prep Tips With Extra Cheese: Lessons From the Flying Pig 3-Way Challenge

I recently completed the Flying Pig 3-Way Challenge with Extra Cheese in Cincinnati. The "3-Way" event, named after its presenting sponsor, Skyline Chili, includes running a 10K race followed by a 5K race on Saturday morning and a half marathon on Sunday morning. The “Extra Cheese” is the addition of a one-mile run to kick things off on Friday night. In total, that’s 23.4 miles over three days. (For those braver than me, there’s also the Flying Pig 4-Way Challenge, which includes the full 26.2 marathon on Sunday instead of the half marathon.)

For me, participating in the Flying Pig 3-Way Challenge was both exhilarating and grueling.

As I pushed through the ups and downs of the race, I noticed striking similarities between this challenge and preparing for the bar exam. Drawing from my experiences both on the course and in the classroom, I've compiled five key insights (and a little "extra cheese") to help you approach bar prep with the same determination and resilience required to conquer a marathon.

1️⃣ Plan Your Route Carefully

During the Flying Pig 3-Way Challenge, the course had its share of surprises and challenges, from steep inclines to stretches of uneven terrain.

Similarly, bar prep requires a well-planned approach to navigate the different subjects and areas. Create a comprehensive study schedule that includes all subjects and practice tests. Factor in rest days, review periods, and practice exams. Think of this as planning your training route.

2️⃣ Pace Yourself for the Long Haul

Completing a half marathon requires steady pacing; if you sprint too fast too early, you’ll burn out before reaching the finish line.

Bar prep is no different. Avoid overloading yourself by trying to study everything in the first few weeks. Instead, adopt a steady pace and gradually increase your study hours as the exam nears. Keep a sustainable rhythm to prevent burnout.

3️⃣ Find Your Support Network

Long-distance runners thrive on the support of the crowd and their fellow runners. Whether it’s a cheer or a high-five, this camaraderie keeps you motivated.

In bar prep, a study group or mentor can provide that essential encouragement. Share notes, discuss challenging concepts, and hold each other accountable. This will make studying less solitary and more productive.

4️⃣ Stay Mentally Strong and Embrace the Challenges

The hills of Cincinnati were brutal, but they reminded me to stay mentally strong and embrace the challenges head-on.

Similarly, you’ll face tough topics and practice questions that seem insurmountable. Rule Against Perpetuities anyone? Don’t let one difficult subject discourage you. Tackle it bit by bit and celebrate your small victories. Maintaining a positive attitude can help you push through the toughest days.

5️⃣ Celebrate the Small Wins and Stay Motivated

Crossing the finish line after months of training is incredibly rewarding.

During bar prep, recognize and celebrate your progress, whether it's scoring higher on practice tests or mastering a tough concept. Reward yourself with breaks, treats, or activities you enjoy. Keeping morale high will help you stay motivated throughout your preparation journey.

🧀 Extra Cheese: Be Flexible and Adapt to Changes

Despite meticulous planning, the unexpected can still happen on race day or during bar prep. This past weekend for the races, for example, storms delayed the 5K race on Saturday, and the Sunday races were under a red flag advisory because of the heat and humidity.

During your bar preparation, you may face unexpected obstacles, such as a particularly tricky practice question or an off day where nothing seems to stick. Stay adaptable and adjust your study plan as needed. Flexibility ensures that you can handle any surprises thrown your way while staying on track toward your goal.

Just like completing the Flying Pig 3-Way Challenge, passing the bar exam requires resilience, strategic planning, and unwavering determination. Plan your study route, maintain a sustainable pace, lean on your support network, and celebrate your progress.
