Why the Bump in July 2024 MBE Scores Could Be Good News for Bar Exam Takers
According to today's announcement from the National Conference of Bar Examiners, the national mean scaled score on the July 2024 Multistate Bar Exam (MBE) hit 141.8, an increase of 1.3 points when compared to last July, which was 140.5.
The announcement is potential good news for examinees. Here's why:
Scaled Scores on the UBE: The Uniform Bar Exam is composed of the MBE, the Multistate Essay Examination (MEE), and the Multistate Performance Test (MPT). Scores from these components are combined to produce a final scaled UBE score. The MBE accounts for 50% of the UBE score, while the MEE and MPT together account for the remaining 50%.
Equating of Scores: The written scores (the MEE and MPT components) are scaled to the MBE scores. This scaling process is designed to ensure that scores are consistent and comparable across different exam administrations. So, if the mean scaled MBE score increases, the scaled essay scores typically see a corresponding increase. This is because the essay and performance test scores are adjusted to reflect the level of difficulty and examinee performance on the MBE.
Positive Implications: An increase in the mean scaled MBE score suggests that, on average, examinees performed better on the MBE portion. This could mean a higher overall pass rate if other factors remain constant. The positive shift in the MBE scores usually results in a positive adjustment in the scaled essay scores, potentially benefiting examinees by boosting their overall UBE scores.
Therefore, the bump in the mean scaled MBE scores for July 2024 could bode well for examinees, as it may lead to higher scaled essay scores and, consequently, a higher likelihood of passing the bar exam. 🤞
